CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: A case has come to light involving payments of around Rs 6 crore in the name of installing lightning conductors and indicators on water tanks. It is alleged that the payment was made without physical verification. Equipment was claimed to have been installed on a total of 1531 tanks, while it has been alleged that fake bills of Rs 17 lakh per tank were passed without lightning conductors and indicators being installed at the sites.

Serious questions are being raised over the payment process and verification of the works in the matter. Under the rules, payment for any construction or installation work should be made only after confirming completion of the work at the relevant site and examining the required documents. However, in this case, these procedures were allegedly not followed. Allegations of irregularities in works related to 1531 water tanks have also brought the role of the concerned departmental officials and the payment process under scrutiny. If the allegations are confirmed, it could amount to a major lapse in the use of government funds and the monitoring system.

At present, physical verification of the tanks, examination of payment-related documents and scrutiny of the role of responsible officials will be important to establish the actual position in the matter. The full picture of the alleged irregularity will become clear only after the findings of the investigation emerge.
