CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Rain affected play on the third day of the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Colombo. India had declared their first innings at 503/9. In reply, Sri Lanka reached 265/8 by stumps and are still 238 runs behind India.
For Sri Lanka, Sonal Dinusha played a superb fighting innings, scoring an unbeaten 82 to push his team closer to avoiding the follow-on. Lahiru Kumara was at the crease with him on 8. Dinusha’s innings strengthened Sri Lanka’s hopes at a time when the Indian bowlers were keeping constant pressure on the hosts.
India’s biggest advantage in the match remains their huge first-innings total. Dhruv Jurel had played an excellent unbeaten knock of 115, while Devdutt Padikkal also scored 117 to put the team in a strong position. India declared at 503 and sent Sri Lanka in to bat under the pressure of a big total.
On the third day, Indian bowlers claimed eight wickets and continued to challenge Sri Lanka’s batting. However, Dinusha and Kumara battled in a late stand and reduced India’s lead. Sri Lanka still need 39 runs to avoid the follow-on. With rain and bad weather likely to cause further interruptions, the fourth day’s play could prove decisive for both teams.
