CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Leh. A symbolic foot march was taken out in Leh on September 23 under the leadership of social activist Sonam Wangchuk to press the demand for Ladakh’s constitutional rights. Some people from outside Ladakh also joined the march.
Wangchuk clarified that the people who came with him were not there for any personal help, but to raise their voices in support of Ladakh’s demands. The march was held ahead of the first anniversary of the violent protests in Ladakh in September 2025. Four people had died during last year’s protests demanding statehood and special safeguards under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Through this year’s activities, Wangchuk has stressed raising these demands peacefully.
Wangchuk had earlier announced a march from September 19 to 24, but the programme was changed due to bad weather and a one-day march was held on September 23. A few dozen people set out with him towards Leh. Wangchuk said he had earlier appealed for more people to join, but later did not insist on it and welcomed those who came.
The main issue of the march remained the demand for full statehood for Ladakh and constitutional safeguards for the region under the Sixth Schedule of the Constitution. Wangchuk has long been raising these demands through peaceful movements and dialogue.
