CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Social activist Sonam Wangchuk has warned the central government of an agitation over Ladakh’s political and constitutional rights. After a meeting with the Ministry of Home Affairs on September 9, Wangchuk said there had been no tangible progress on their key demands during the talks. He has asked the government to provide clear and credible assurances within a week.
Wangchuk and representatives from Ladakh are demanding statehood, constitutional safeguards and a stronger democratic system for the region. The delegation had expected a detailed draft on the rights and powers of the proposed Ladakh Assembly, but leaders expressed disappointment after the meeting.
Wangchuk has said that if the government does not present a concrete proposal or assurance within the next week, the movement could be intensified between September 19 and 24. Earlier, the proposed Kargil-Leh padyatra on September 10 had been postponed for the time being due to talks with the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Leaders from Ladakh say an effective constitutional arrangement is necessary to protect the region’s land, culture, environment and the rights of local people. The next phase of the agitation will now depend on the government’s next step.
