CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Cockroach Janata Party (CJP) leaders Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka have been sent to five days’ judicial custody in connection with a protest at Jantar Mantar in Delhi. The two were produced before a special executive magistrate on October 14, 2026, where an order was issued sending them to custody. A third party leader, Ajinkya Shinde, was released on a personal bond.
According to Ratna Singh, head of CJP’s legal team, Sourav Das, Ashutosh Ranka and Ajinkya Shinde were detained on October 13 during the protest at Jantar Mantar. She alleged that the three were not allowed to meet their lawyers until late at night and were brought to Parliament Street police station in a private vehicle at around 3 a.m.
Police have registered a case against the three on various allegations, including alleged encroachment, violation of a bond given to maintain peace and obstructing a government servant from performing duty. According to police, the leaders crossed barricades and entered an area that is no longer notified as an official protest site.
CJP leaders were demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. The party and some opposition groups have raised questions over alleged irregularities in the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of the electoral rolls. However, the Election Commission and the BJP have rejected allegations of discrepancies in the voter list.
On October 13, protesters reached Jantar Mantar, waved the national flag and raised slogans. Police detained them after stopping them. The action came at a time when Delhi Police has removed Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest sites and declared Ramlila Maidan, Burari Ground and CBD Ground as the new designated venues.
These CJP leaders had also been detained on October 10 after arriving in Delhi. They were released at that time after furnishing bonds related to maintaining peace. Police allege that returning to Jantar Mantar violated the terms of those bonds.
CJP’s legal team has questioned the police action in the case and said it will take further legal steps. After the order sending Sourav Das and Ashutosh Ranka to five days’ judicial custody, the matter is now being discussed at both legal and political levels.
