CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has further tightened rules to curb spam calls and unsolicited commercial messages. Under the new rules, telecom companies will use artificial intelligence and machine learning-based systems to identify suspected spam numbers.
Under the revised mechanism, if at least three complaints from different consumers are received against a number within 10 days and the company’s AI system flags it as suspected spam, action can be initiated. There is also a provision for additional action after five complaints for further investigation.
Numbers used by telemarketers and spam senders who repeatedly violate the rules may face action such as long-term disconnection and blacklisting. According to TRAI, in the first quarter of 2026, 46,786 telecom resources were disconnected for one year and 263 senders were blacklisted for one year.
Consumers can use TRAI’s complaint mechanism if they receive unwanted commercial calls or messages. According to TRAI, 1909 and the DND service can be used to file complaints about spam or unsolicited commercial communication.
