International Literacy Day is observed every year on September 8. In 2026, the 60th year of the day is being marked. The day underlines the importance of literacy for all and carries the message of promoting education, equality, inclusion and sustainable development.
The theme of International Literacy Day 2026 is “Literacy for people, planet and prosperity”. The main objective of this theme is to convey that literacy is not limited only to the ability to read and write. It also enables individuals to access better opportunities, participate actively in society, and help build a more inclusive and sustainable future.
The special cancellation cachet released on this occasion is an important medium to take the message of the importance of literacy and its wider social concerns to the public. The event not only increases awareness about education and literacy but also enriches the philatelic tradition of the Department of Posts.
In the Department of Posts, a cancellation postmark is a type of postal mark used on postage stamps or postal material. Its main purpose is to cancel the postage stamp so that it cannot be reused. Ordinary cancellations carry details such as the name of the post office and the date, while special or pictorial cancellations are issued to mark a special day, event, memorial, historical occurrence or significant achievement.
Special cancellations hold particular importance for stamp collectors because of their distinctive and attractive form. Along with preserving the memory of an important day or occasion, they also become an important document of that event for future generations.
The special cancellation postmark released on International Literacy Day reinforces the message of “Literacy for all” and inspires every section of society to move forward towards education, equality, inclusion and sustainable development.
