Leeds. Sri Lanka defeated England by 16 runs in the second ODI to level the three-match one-day series 1-1. In the match played at Headingley, Sri Lanka batted first and scored 321 for 6 in 50 overs. Captain Kusal Mendis played a superb innings of 121 runs.

Chasing a target of 321, England made a strong start. Tom Banton scored 73 and Ben Duckett made 67. The two put together a 143-run partnership for the first wicket. After that, Sri Lanka spinner Dunith Wellalage changed the course of the match by taking crucial wickets. He claimed three wickets.

England captain Harry Brook’s side was moving close to the target, but Jos Buttler’s injury also increased the team’s difficulties. Buttler was dismissed after scoring 69. England could manage only 305 for 9 in 50 overs and lost the match by 16 runs. England had won the first ODI by 89 runs. The decisive third ODI of the series will now be played at The Oval on Sunday. For both teams, the match will be a chance to win the series.
