CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In a heartfelt tribute to one of India’s most revered poets and literary figures, St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai, will commemorate Eunice de Souza’s birth anniversary as Poetry Day every year. The college, where de Souza taught English for decades, has chosen August 1 — her birthday — to honor her enduring legacy in Indian English literature.

A celebrated poet, novelist, teacher, and editor, Eunice de Souza was known for her incisive poetry, feminist voice, and dedication to nurturing literary talent among students. Her iconic works like Women in Dutch Painting, Ways of Belonging, and her deeply personal yet socially sharp poems have inspired generations.

To mark the inaugural Poetry Day, the college’s English department is organizing a literary gathering, featuring readings of de Souza’s poetry by students, alumni, and faculty. Acclaimed poets and writers from across the country will join panel discussions and open mic sessions to share how Eunice’s work shaped their own creative journeys.

The event will also see the unveiling of a dedicated poetry corner in the college library, showcasing de Souza’s works along with contemporary Indian poets she supported.

Speaking about the initiative, college principal Dr. Rajendra Shinde said, “Eunice was not only a brilliant writer but a mentor who believed in the power of words to challenge and change. Poetry Day is our way of ensuring her voice continues to echo within these walls.”

The celebration underscores the college’s commitment to preserving literary heritage and inspiring new voices in Indian poetry.
