CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: New Delhi. A shortage of officers and employees in the Delhi government's Social Welfare and Scheduled Castes-Scheduled Tribes Welfare Department is affecting the implementation of several important welfare schemes. The impact has also been felt on scholarship schemes, amendments to existing schemes and preparations to make hostels fully operational. To address the problem, the department has asked the concerned Services Department to fill vacant posts on a priority basis. According to officials, the department wrote to the Services Department in July, informing it about the administrative problems being caused by the staff shortage. The letter said that, in the absence of adequate staff, there were difficulties in implementing welfare programmes and running hostels smoothly.
According to available details, 13 of the 25 sanctioned posts across six categories in the department are vacant, while employees are posted in only 12 posts. Of the 13 sanctioned posts of junior assistants, seven are vacant. Vacancies also remain in assistant section officer and other administrative posts.
The shortage of staff is also affecting the disposal of files. According to officials, proposals that could be completed in about one month under normal circumstances are now taking nearly three months to process. This has slowed decisions related to schemes and administrative procedures. The department is also facing the challenge of making Nehru Bal Hostel and Kamla Nehru Girls Hostel fully operational. According to officials, instructions have been issued to make both hostels fully functional in the current year. For this, it is necessary to fill the vacant posts on time.
The situation may cause difficulties for beneficiaries of welfare schemes, including students from Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. The department's priority now is to fill vacant posts, speed up pending work and ensure that the benefits of schemes reach eligible people on time.
