CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Bhopal: Storm flattens paddy crop over 3,000 hectares, farmers worried
Storms and strong winds in Chhattisgarh have increased farmers’ concerns. Due to bad weather, standing paddy crop over about 3,000 hectares has been flattened on the ground. With crops falling in the fields, there is apprehension that production may be affected. Farmers are now making efforts at their own level to prevent losses. Many farmers are tying paddy plants with ropes and trying to support them again.
The impact of strong winds and rain was not limited to the paddy crop. Reports have also emerged of damage to maize, vegetables and pulse crops. Crop lodging and waterlogging in fields have created fresh difficulties for farmers.
According to farmers, when paddy crop falls close to ripening, harvesting becomes difficult. Moisture and water in flattened plants also increase the risk of grain damage. Farmers are therefore working continuously in the fields to reduce losses. In view of the damage in the agriculture sector, affected farmers need relief and an assessment of crop loss. The actual extent of damage will be known only after a survey. For now, farmers are trying to save their crops while hoping for an improvement in the weather.
