CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Concern has grown over scrub typhus after a 20-year-old student of Anna University in Tamil Nadu died from the infection. The student had a high fever for about four days, which was initially considered a common infection. When his condition worsened, he was taken to hospital. After a dengue test came back negative, he was tested for scrub typhus and the report was positive. By the time he reached hospital, he had confusion, breathing difficulty and other serious complications.
Scrub typhus is an infection caused by the bacterium Orientia tsutsugamushi. It is not spread by mosquitoes, but through the bite of infected larval mites, known as chiggers. These mites are found in areas with grass, bushes and dense vegetation. The main symptoms include sudden high fever, headache, body pain and weakness. In some patients, a skin rash or a black mark at the bite site may also appear. However, not every patient necessarily has all these symptoms.
The disease can be treated if medical care is received in time, but a delay in treatment can affect organs such as the lungs, kidneys, liver, brain and heart. In severe cases, complications such as breathing difficulty, confusion, low blood pressure and multi-organ failure may occur. Therefore, in cases of persistent high fever or rapidly worsening health, it is essential to consult a doctor and get tested immediately.
