CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A special lecture on “History Writing, Research Methodology and Religion-Philosophy” was organised by the Department of History at Sarojini Naidu Government Girls Post Graduate College, Bhopal. Young historian and writer Kishwar Jahan attended the programme as the keynote speaker.
Kishwar Jahan informed the students about research methodology in history writing and the study of original sources from different periods. Referring to the study of ancient Indian history, she underlined the need for knowledge of the Kharosthi script and the Sanskrit language, and guided students on understanding and studying related sources. For the study of medieval history, she emphasised knowledge of Urdu, Persian and Arabic, as well as dialogue and contact with scholars of these languages to study original sources. To understand modern Indian history, she highlighted the importance of studying documents, archival material and other primary sources. She said that for serious study and research in history, a researcher must understand the nature, language and context of sources.
Discussing the history of the Bhopal princely state, Kishwar Jahan also shared important information related to the contribution and struggles of freedom fighters from Bhopal state during the freedom movement. College principal Pratima Yadav said history is not merely the study of the past, but an important medium for understanding the present and developing an aware approach towards the future. She encouraged the students to develop interest in history and a research-oriented outlook.
Programme convener and Department of History faculty member Dr Sanjana Sharma spoke on the vast scope and importance of history, saying that history plays an important role in understanding the journey of the development of human civilisation. History connects us with the experiences of the past and provides a perspective to understand the present.
The programme was conducted by Kavita Baghel. A large number of students from the Department of History were present on the occasion. Through the lecture, the students gained information on important aspects of history writing, research methodology, original sources and religion-philosophy in the Indian knowledge tradition.
