CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Regional Museum of Natural History, Bhopal (a regional center of the National Museum of Natural History, New Delhi) organized two educational events for participants of its Summer Nature Study Program – “Harit Shavak” and “Harit Kishore.”

For the Harit Shavak (Junior Green Cadets) participants, a workshop on animal model making using clay was conducted. During this session, museum sculptor Arvind Anupam taught participants how to create a relief model of a parrot and a 3D model of a turtle using clay. He also explained the preparation process: clay should be collected from a pond, finely sieved, and cleared of any impurities. Then it should be kneaded with an appropriate amount of sand and water to make it suitable for model-making.

Manik Lal Gupta, Scientist-C and Program Coordinator at the museum, explained the ecological importance of parrots and turtles. Parrots aid in afforestation by spreading seeds after eating fruits, which promotes plant growth. Turtles, on the other hand, play the role of natural cleaners by consuming fallen leaves and organic waste.

For the Harit Kishore (Senior Green Cadets) participants, a study tour of the laboratories at the Central Pollution Control Board (CPCB), Bhopal was organized. During the visit, experts from CPCB including Dr. Ranu Verma (Scientist-C), Rameshwar Bandewar (Senior Scientific Assistant), Director Rashmi Thakur, and Junior Lab Assistant Jagjeevan Ram, provided detailed insights into air pollution, water pollution, and the standards for various pollutants.

They also discussed methods for pollution testing and the preventive measures being implemented. Finally, they demonstrated how to identify compostable plastics and other types of plastics using dichloromethane. Through this educational visit, participants gained valuable information about various environmental pollution issues and current efforts to combat them.
