Under the guidance of Executive Director Prof. Ajay Singh, AIIMS Bhopal has achieved a life-saving milestone. Recently, a complex brain aneurysm was successfully treated at the institute using a state-of-the-art and minimally invasive “pinhole procedure.” The intervention was performed through a tiny artery in the patient’s wrist, eliminating the need for open brain surgery.
A 60-year-old female patient suffered a subarachnoid hemorrhage due to a ruptured and complex basilar artery aneurysm. She was subsequently referred to the Interventional Radiology Treatment Center at AIIMS Bhopal, where a team of specialists recommended stent-assisted coiling under the endovascular technique.
As part of the procedure, a catheter was inserted through a minuscule puncture in the wrist artery. With utmost precision, the team of interventional radiologists guided the catheter to the aneurysm in the brain. There, a stent was placed and the aneurysm was filled with ultra-fine coils, effectively preventing any recurrence of bleeding.
The entire process was completed without any major incision, and the patient was discharged in a healthy condition just a few days later.
This cutting-edge treatment was made possible through the collaborative efforts of interventional radiologists, neurosurgeons, critical care physicians, and neurologists at AIIMS Bhopal. Notably, the treatment was conducted under the Ayushman Bharat scheme, enabling the patient — a scheme beneficiary — to receive this expensive treatment completely free of cost.
On this occasion, Dr. Rajesh Malik (Head, Radiology Diagnosis) and Dr. Aman Kumar (Interventional Radiologist) emphasized the need to increase awareness among healthcare professionals and the public about such advanced medical services available at AIIMS Bhopal.
