CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: In the Neurosurgery Department of AIIMS Bhopal, a critical brain tumor surgery was successfully performed on a 13-year-old girl from Ashok Nagar. The tumor, which was the size of a football, was protruding from her head.
The girl was in critical condition and on a ventilator. An emergency surgery decision was made after an interdisciplinary meeting chaired by Prof. Amit Agrawal, Dr. Adesh Srivastav, Dr. Sumit Raj, and Dr. Pradeep Choukse to save the child’s life.
The operation took place in the Neurosurgery OT of AIIMS, but within a few months, the tumor regrew in a grotesque size. Dr. Sumit Raj performed the surgery with assistance from Dr. Jitendra and Dr. Abhishek. The procedure lasted approximately 8 hours. The tumor was highly vascularized and affected the skull, which was removed and covered with a titanium plate.
Dr. Gaurav Chaturvedi and the plastic surgery team led by Vikas closed the skin. The anesthesia team, led by Dr. Ashutosh and Milind, played a crucial role in the procedure. The patient regained consciousness the next day and is currently recovering well after the surgery.
Very few cases of primary calvarial osteosarcoma, which is a highly aggressive tumor, have been reported worldwide. Dr. Ajay Singh, Executive Director of AIIMS, congratulated the entire team for their efforts.
