CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Waking up suddenly at night can be normal once in a while, but if the problem is persistent and sleep is being interrupted repeatedly, an underlying health issue may be involved. In particular, waking frequently at night along with snoring, pauses in breathing, getting up gasping for air and excessive daytime sleepiness can be signs of obstructive sleep apnea.
If repeated urination is the reason for waking up, it should also not be ignored. Getting up frequently at night to urinate is called nocturia. It can have several causes, including diabetes, urinary tract problems, an enlarged prostate, certain medicines and sleep apnea.
In addition, stress, anxiety, excessive caffeine intake or drinking too much fluid before bedtime can also affect sleep. Therefore, it is not correct to conclude that a person has a particular illness only on the basis of waking up at night.
If the problem persists, there is daytime fatigue, loud snoring or a feeling that breathing stops during sleep, it is better to consult a doctor. If needed, a sleep study or blood and urine tests may be advised.
