CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: How much sugar should one eat during cancer? Doctor explains the right way to manage diet
When cancer treatment is under way, patients often hear many different views about diet. One of the most common questions is whether a cancer patient should give up sugar completely. According to experts, there is no evidence that stopping sugar entirely cures cancer or shrinks a tumour. The body’s healthy cells also need glucose for energy.
However, this does not mean that sweets, sugary drinks and high-sugar foods should be consumed freely during cancer. Taking too much added sugar can increase total calorie intake, which may raise the risk of weight gain. Therefore, it is better to limit sweets, sugar-sweetened beverages, cakes, biscuits and other processed foods high in sugar.
During cancer treatment, the body needs adequate protein, calories, vitamins, minerals and fluids. In some patients, treatment may reduce appetite or cause rapid weight loss. In such cases, following a strict diet or stopping carbohydrates completely without medical advice can be harmful.
Patients should include vegetables, fruits, whole grains, pulses and adequate protein in their meals. The natural sugars present in fruits and vegetables are not considered the same as sweets or sugar-sweetened drinks. Dietary needs can vary according to the type of cancer, treatment and the patient’s weight, so it is advisable to consult a doctor or a registered dietitian for a personalised diet plan.
