CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president and former Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal was attacked at a gurdwara in Maharashtra’s Nanded on Thursday, August 13, 2026. The incident occurred during his visit to Gurdwara Mata Sahib Devan Ji, where he was accompanied by his wife and SAD leader Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
According to officials, an assailant allegedly dressed in Nihang attire attacked Badal with a kirpan. Security personnel immediately intervened and overpowered the attacker, preventing the assault from causing more serious injuries. Badal suffered an injury to his right hand and was taken to a private hospital in Nanded for treatment. Reports said his condition was stable and the injury was not life-threatening.
A security personnel was also injured while attempting to protect the SAD chief. Police arrested the alleged attacker at the spot and began investigating the circumstances and motive behind the incident. CCTV footage and other evidence are expected to form part of the investigation.
The attack has triggered widespread political concern, particularly because Badal is a Z-plus security protectee. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis ordered an inquiry and spoke to officials regarding the incident. Prime Minister Narendra Modi also enquired about Badal’s health through Harsimrat Kaur Badal.
The incident has raised fresh questions about security arrangements for prominent political leaders at religious places and the need to ensure public safety while maintaining the sanctity of such institutions.
