CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: Mumbai. Amid the ongoing churn within the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) in Maharashtra politics, Deputy Chief Minister and party chief Sunetra Pawar on Tuesday held a meeting with party MLAs and leaders at her official residence, Devgiri, in Mumbai. The meeting came at a time when some senior party leaders had met Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Delhi in Sunetra Pawar’s absence. After that, political discussions intensified over leadership and internal differences in the party.
About 50 MLAs, including ministers, attended the meeting. Sunetra Pawar’s sons Parth Pawar and Jai Pawar were also present. Mumbai NCP president Zeeshan Siddiqui said the MLAs, ministers and office-bearers who attended the meeting expressed confidence in one voice in the party’s unity under Sunetra Pawar’s leadership. He said Sunetra Pawar would lead the party in the 2029 elections as well.
Earlier, senior NCP leaders Praful Patel, Sunil Tatkare, Chhagan Bhujbal, Hasan Mushrif, Dilip Walse Patil and Dhananjay Munde had met Amit Shah in Delhi. Sunetra Pawar and her son Parth were not part of that meeting. This led to speculation about dissatisfaction within the party over leadership and a possible merger of the two NCP factions. However, party leaders have rejected talk of a merger and reports that Sunetra Pawar was being sidelined.
The meeting discussed strengthening the party organisation, preparations for the upcoming Zilla Parishad elections and speeding up development work in MLAs’ constituencies. Sunetra Pawar told ministers to give party MLAs adequate time and support for development work in their areas. The party leadership also stressed continuing the tradition started by late Ajit Pawar of regular meetings with MLAs. The meeting is being seen as an attempt to send a message of unity within the party and strengthen the organisational position amid questions being raised over leadership.
