CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbai. Memories of the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks are once again in focus. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio paid tribute to the victims of the 26/11 attack at Mumbai’s Taj Mahal Palace Hotel on October 20. During the visit, the hotel’s security chief, Sunil Kudyadi, briefed him on details related to the attack. Significantly, Kudyadi himself was present in the hotel when terrorists targeted the Taj Hotel.
Who is Sunil Kudyadi? Sunil Kudyadi is the Associate Vice President of the Security and Safety Department and Head of Security at Mumbai’s prestigious Taj Mahal Palace Hotel. Along with overseeing the hotel’s security arrangements, he also has first-hand experience of the terror attack that took place on November 26, 2008. Because he was present in the hotel during the attack, he has direct knowledge of the circumstances of that horrific incident.
Kudyadi briefed Rubio on the sequence of the attack. During his visit to Mumbai, Marco Rubio laid a wreath at the 26/11 memorial at the Taj Hotel. A total of 166 people were killed in the attack, including six American citizens. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar told Rubio that Kudyadi was present in the hotel at the time of the attack and had first-hand knowledge of the incident. Kudyadi briefed Rubio on the attack inside the hotel and the challenges faced during that period. The meeting was part of an occasion to remember those who lost their lives in the attack and to reiterate the shared India-US commitment against terrorism.
The Taj Hotel was also a target in the 26/11 attacks. On November 26, 2008, terrorists from Pakistan carried out coordinated attacks at several locations in Mumbai. Apart from the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel, Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Leopold Cafe, the Oberoi-Trident Hotel, Cama Hospital and Nariman House were also targeted. During the attacks, security forces carried out a prolonged operation to confront the terrorists and tried to evacuate hostages safely. During the tribute, Marco Rubio remembered the victims and honoured the courage of those who helped people during the attack. He also reiterated the commitment to continue cooperation between India and the United States against terrorism.
