CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A controversy that began over women’s public participation in Kerala now appears to be turning into a political and religious confrontation. Leaders associated with the prominent Sunni organisation Samastha Kerala Jem-iyyathul Ulama and the Kerala Muslim Jamaat have objected to remarks by Kerala Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan, in which he criticised Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar’s statement on women.
The dispute began with comments by Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar on women’s participation in religious gatherings and public programmes. He had said women should remain confined to the home and that their presence on public platforms among men was not in keeping with Islamic norms. After these remarks, debate intensified in Kerala over women’s rights, religious freedom and the role of women in public life.
Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan rejected Kanthapuram’s views, saying that a mindset that keeps women away from public life is not acceptable in a modern and democratic society. He stressed women’s equal participation and constitutional rights.
After the Chief Minister’s remarks, the Kerala Muslim Jamaat criticised Satheesan’s statement. The organisation said it was not appropriate for a person holding the office of Chief Minister to comment in this manner on a religious scholar’s interpretation. The EK faction of Samastha also expressed disagreement with the Chief Minister’s remarks.
The controversy has also created political unease between the Congress and its ally, the Indian Union Muslim League. The IUML has adopted a cautious position on the issue, while some women leaders of the party have demanded a clearer stand on women’s public and political participation.
As the controversy grew and criticism continued, Kanthapuram appealed to his supporters to exercise restraint. He said people should be cautious about attempts to turn spiritual discussions into controversy and division. He also expressed regret over the dispute and asked supporters not to be provoked.
The issue is not only religious but political as well. The controversy has triggered a fresh debate in Kerala politics over the role of women, the influence of religious institutions and constitutional rights. CPM leader M.A. Baby has also described Kanthapuram’s remarks as contrary to constitutional values.
For now, religious organisations, political parties and women leaders are taking different positions in the dispute. Despite Kanthapuram’s clarification, the debate over women’s public participation indicates that the issue is likely to continue in Kerala politics.
