CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. The Supreme Court has sought detailed information from the central government on the relocation of the 135-year-old Central Secretariat Library under the Central Vista redevelopment plan.

A bench of Justice Sanjay Kumar and Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva directed the Centre to file an affidavit within three weeks. The court asked the Centre how much space has been earmarked for the library in the new plan and what its complete layout is. The court also wants to know whether the proposed space will be adequate to safely house about 8.5 lakh books currently in Shastri Bhavan, as well as nearly 2 lakh additional books kept in boxes at RK Puram.

During the hearing, Additional Solicitor General Aishwarya Bhati, appearing for the Centre, said space had been allocated for the library under the Central Vista plan. The court, however, asked that instead of only oral information, full details of the area and the actual layout be placed on record through an affidavit.

The Union Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs has also said that space has been provided for the Central Secretariat Library under the Kartavya Path redevelopment plan and that the construction process is underway.

The Supreme Court has also appointed senior advocate Haripriya Padmanabhan as amicus curiae to assist the court in the matter.
