CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: The Supreme Court on Monday urged the Centre and Delhi Police to take stronger and more effective measures to ensure that women feel safe across the national capital, including at night. The bench of Justices J.B. Pardiwala and K. Vinod Chandran was hearing a suo motu case concerning recent rape incidents in Delhi-NCR. The court observed that there was a perception that women were unsafe in certain vulnerable areas of the city and stressed that authorities must prioritise prevention rather than action only after a crime has occurred. The bench said every woman in Delhi should feel safe while walking on the streets or travelling by road and metro, even at 10 pm.
It also stressed the need to create an effective deterrent against people inclined to commit crimes against women. The court said deficiencies in policing, surveillance and public safety systems should not create conditions that facilitate offences. The Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of recent rape cases on September 28, describing the incidents as raising serious concerns about public safety and institutional accountability. The court has also sought greater attention to vulnerable locations and safety mechanisms in the capital. The latest observations underline the need for preventive policing, safer public spaces and stronger institutional measures to protect women from sexual violence.
