CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: New Delhi. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear on Thursday, 15 October, matters related to protests against Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the controversy over the Special Intensive Revision of the electoral roll. A petition by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and other leaders of the opposition alliance is also listed for hearing. The court will also consider cases challenging restrictions and police action linked to protests in Delhi.
In the matter of alleged irregularities in the electoral roll, Rahul Gandhi and opposition leaders have alleged large-scale deletion of names and irregularities in the process of adding, deleting and restoring names during the Special Intensive Revision of the voter list. The petitioners have sought an independent inquiry into the changes made in the electoral roll. The petition also seeks an inquiry headed by a retired Supreme Court judge with the assistance of technical experts. Opposition leaders have also demanded a judicial examination of records and decisions related to the Election Commission. These allegations are claims made by the petitioners; the court’s final decision is still awaited.
The hearing also includes matters related to designated places for protests in Delhi and police action against protesters. The decision to remove Jantar Mantar from the list of designated protest sites has also been challenged. The petitioners say clear and reasonable arrangements are necessary to protect the right to peaceful protest. During the hearing, questions related to the freedom to protest, public order and the smooth functioning of democratic institutions may come before the court.
The issue of changes in the electoral roll and protests against the Chief Election Commissioner remains a major subject of political debate. Opposition parties have demanded transparency and accountability, while it will be important for the position on these allegations to be clarified through the judicial process. The listing of the petitions for hearing does not, by itself, indicate the court’s agreement with any side’s claims or a final order. Attention is now on what directions the Supreme Court gives in these matters.
