CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The investigation into allegations of police action and violence during the student protest held at Delhi’s Jantar Mantar in July has now gathered pace. The Supreme Court has directed a five-member High-Powered Inquiry Committee (HPEC) to begin its probe. The committee is being chaired by former Supreme Court judge Justice R. Subhash Reddy.
The HPEC has to examine allegations related to the use of pellet guns, lathi-charge, tear gas and other use of force during the protest. It will also look into alleged violence against women protesters, injuries suffered by police personnel and damage caused to public property. The committee will also assess whether the use of force was in accordance with prescribed rules and legal standards. On September 16, the Supreme Court rejected a demand for reconstitution of the committee and expressed confidence in the existing HPEC. The court also asked for witnesses’ identities to be kept confidential and for a separate online portal to be arranged for submission of evidence. The Supreme Court has also directed Delhi Police to take necessary action regarding the security of a 14-year-old girl protester and her family. After completing the inquiry, the committee will place its findings before the court.
