CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Supreme Court has indicated it may lift the absolute ban on the use and sale of firecrackers in the Delhi-NCR region during Diwali, though within strict time windows. A bench led by Chief Justice B. R. Gavai and Justice K. Vinod Chandran reserved its decision on relaxing the ban, hinting at a possible five-day trial period where bursting may be allowed under regulated hours. The bench suggested limiting festivities to evening hours, such as 8 pm–10 pm, and perhaps short slots during major festivals, weddings, or personal celebrations. The proposal also includes morning and evening windows on special occasions. The court and environmental experts weighed concerns about air quality spikes, especially amid stubble burning and meteorological conditions. While “green crackers” are touted as less polluting alternatives, experts caution that many still use harmful chemicals and could trigger pollution surges. The move may offer festive relief, but regulators, environmentalists, and civic bodies will closely monitor any implementation. As the court’s final order approaches, Delhiites await clarity on whether Diwali celebrations with firecrackers will return under newly imposed restrictions.
