CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Fear in the minds of offenders is necessary, Supreme Court says on rape cases

New Delhi. The Supreme Court on Monday expressed serious concern over recent sexual crimes against women and minors in Delhi-NCR. The court said police and the administration would have to take effective steps on the ground to ensure the safety of women. The matter is being heard by a bench headed by Justice J.B. Pardiwala.

The Supreme Court asked Delhi Police whether any effective system exists for continuous monitoring of such sensitive areas and immediate response to incidents. The court said a strong fear of the law must be created in the minds of people inclined to commit crimes, only then can such offences be effectively curbed.

The court also said every woman in Delhi should feel safe while walking on the road even at 10 pm, or while travelling by Metro and road transport. The court stressed making security, surveillance and police patrolling in public places effective.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had taken suo motu cognisance of recent rape and sexual offence cases in Delhi-NCR and directed a review of the broader security arrangements. The court has sought reports on several aspects, including lighting in public places, surveillance, patrolling and use of the national database of sexual offenders.
