CNN Central News & Networks / ITDC India ePress / ITDC News /Agencies/ Delhi: Supreme Court strict on firecrackers in Delhi, suggests seeking Virat Kohli’s help for awareness appeal
New Delhi. The Supreme Court has sought responses from the Centre and the Delhi government on the use of firecrackers and air pollution in Delhi-NCR during Diwali. During the hearing, the court questioned the functioning of officials, saying orders are issued every year but are not being implemented effectively on the ground. The court observed that violations of orders are greater and compliance is lower. During this, the judges suggested taking the help of popular personalities and sportspersons such as cricketer Virat Kohli in public awareness campaigns.
A bench of Justice M.M. Sundresh and Justice Prasanna B. Varale said the pollution problem would not be resolved merely by imposing a ban. Effective monitoring and strict compliance with rules are necessary for this. The court suggested that popular players such as Virat Kohli could appeal to people to celebrate Deepavali as a festival of lights and help reduce pollution caused by firecrackers. Emphasis was also placed on making children in schools aware of the harmful effects of firecrackers.
During the hearing, the court expressed displeasure over the failure to present a detailed report on compliance with rules after limited sale and use of green firecrackers was permitted last year. The bench asked the government how many investigation teams were formed, how many inspections were conducted, what action was taken against those selling banned firecrackers and how many cases were registered.
The court said it was not currently in favour of imposing a complete ban on firecrackers, but warned that a strict stand could be taken if rules were not followed. The Supreme Court has reserved its order on restrictions related to firecrackers in Delhi-NCR.
