CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi. The Supreme Court on 26 October 2026 took an important step on Chhattisgarh’s anti-conversion law, seeking responses from the Centre and the state government on a petition challenging it. The petition, filed on behalf of the Christian Adivasi Mahasabha, has questioned the constitutional validity of several provisions of the Chhattisgarh Freedom of Religion Act, 2026.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant issued notice in the matter. During the hearing, the court also said petitions challenging the same law are pending in the Chhattisgarh High Court. The court directed that information on the related cases be gathered and that coordination of their hearing be considered.
The petitioners have alleged that some provisions of the law could affect religious freedom, privacy and personal autonomy. The petition objects to conditions such as prior notice, public disclosure and completing formalities before the authorities in the process of voluntary conversion. Provisions linked to the registration of religious leaders who conduct conversions have also been challenged.
The petition also claims that the law’s broad definitions could affect religious preaching and prayer meetings. Questions have also been raised over action by officials during Sunday prayer meetings in churches. These are allegations made by the petitioners, which are yet to be considered by the court.
