CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: New Delhi. The dispute over the special intensive revision (SIR) of the voter list in Maharashtra has reached the Supreme Court. On allegations that a large number of voters’ names have been removed from the list in the state, the Supreme Court on Monday, October 26, 2026, issued notices to the Election Commission, the Union government, the Maharashtra State Election Commission and the state government, seeking their replies. The next hearing in the matter will be on November 5.
Senior advocate Arvind Datar appeared for petitioner Arun Anandgiri before a bench of Chief Justice Suryakant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana. He claimed that there are complaints that names of nearly 33 percent of voters were removed during the SIR process in Maharashtra. The petition also claimed that names of around 40.6 percent of voters were missing from the list in Pune and some other areas. However, these figures have been presented by the petitioner and are yet to be verified.
Concern increased by redevelopment projects
During the hearing, it was argued that around 3,500 redevelopment projects in Mumbai and Pune are leading to the demolition of several old buildings and residential colonies. As a result, a large number of people have had to leave their old addresses and move elsewhere. The petitioner said such voters face the risk of having their names removed from the list because address details are not available or because of discrepancies in records.
Questions were also raised over Form-6. The petitioner objected to asking voters whose names were already recorded in the voter list to fill Form-6. The argument was that this form is meant for the registration of new voters and that there should be a separate mechanism for existing voters. The court was also requested to extend the deadline for filing claims and objections and to stay the process of issuing the final list. However, the Supreme Court did not issue any immediate order at this stage to extend the deadline or stay the final list. The bench said extending the deadline could be considered if needed.
According to the Election Commission’s revised schedule, publication of Maharashtra’s final voter list is scheduled for November 16, 2026. The court will now hear the replies of the parties concerned during the November 5 hearing and consider further action.
