CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Supreme Court of India has clarified its stance in the ongoing controversy related to an NCERT textbook chapter on judicial functioning, stating that its focus is on the content and not on individual academicians involved in its preparation. The court modified earlier observations that had been interpreted as strong criticism of experts linked to the curriculum development process.

The matter concerns a Class 8 Social Science chapter introduced by the National Council of Educational Research and Training, which discussed issues such as judicial corruption, case backlog, and structural challenges within the justice system. The Supreme Court had earlier taken serious note of the content, even ordering action against certain individuals associated with it. However, during recent proceedings, the bench emphasized that academic contributors should not be personally targeted for institutional or policy-level content decisions.

The court’s clarification aims to balance two key principles—protecting institutional integrity and safeguarding academic freedom. It also reflects a broader judicial approach of ensuring that textbook content is scrutinized without discouraging scholarly participation in curriculum development. The case continues to draw attention from legal experts, educators, and policymakers as it raises important questions about free expression, educational content standards, and the boundaries of judicial intervention in academic matters.
