CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: A powerful 7.4-magnitude earthquake—and a second 6.7-magnitude tremor—struck off the coast of Mindanao, southern Philippines, leaving survivors in despair with nowhere to sleep and nothing to eat.
Coastal communities, especially in Manay, where about 40,000 residents live, are reeling under destruction: homes and shops lie in ruins, electricity is down, and hundreds of aftershocks continue to rattle the region.
With over 800 aftershocks recorded, many fear returning indoors.
Some people are sleeping outside—on streets, in tents, under tarps, in vehicles, or on mats in parks—trying to avoid being trapped by collapsing structures.
The local hospital was severely damaged; patients have been moved outside due to structural concerns.
Rebuilding seems distant for many: loss of shelter, belongings, and income weigh heavily. With aid required urgently for food, shelter, clean water, and medical care, the humanitarian needs are mounting. The Philippines’ vulnerability to seismic activity—being part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire”—further heightens fears among people already coping with recent disasters
