CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Mumbai. Indian batter Suryakumar Yadav could be seen playing for Mumbai in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season. He has informed Mumbai Cricket Association president Ajinkya Naik about his availability. Mumbai will begin its 2026-27 Ranji campaign against Chandigarh at the Wankhede Stadium on October 11.
The 36-year-old Suryakumar last played first-class cricket in February 2025 in the Ranji Trophy semifinal against Vidarbha. He has scored 5,758 runs in 86 first-class matches so far, including 14 centuries and 30 half-centuries. His return to Ranji cricket after a long gap is expected to strengthen Mumbai’s middle order.
On the other hand, Mumbai have suffered a major setback in the form of Shardul Thakur. Shardul sustained a hand injury after being hit by a ball during Ayush Mhatre’s batting in practice. According to Mumbai Cricket Association sources, he will not be able to play the first few matches.
Shardul captained Mumbai in the previous Ranji season and took 13 wickets in six matches, besides scoring 130 runs. Siddhesh Lad is likely to be handed the Mumbai captaincy for the upcoming season. In this situation, Suryakumar’s return and Shardul’s absence will be significant changes for Mumbai in the opening matches.
