CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal : Nepal’s politics has always been a story of ups and downs, filled with unexpected turns. This time, when the country’s reins were handed over on an interim basis to former Chief Justice Sushila Karki, the decision was regarded as historic in many ways. Karki’s journey—from Banaras Hindu University to becoming the first female Chief Justice of Nepal’s Supreme Court, and now stepping into interim leadership—reflects a life of struggle shaped by education, courage, and moral conviction.
Much of Karki’s education took place in India. Having pursued higher studies at Banaras Hindu University (BHU), she not only absorbed the academic environment deeply but also built a strong foundation of democratic values and a sense of justice. This is why her judicial decisions have always been seen as symbols of fairness and transparency.
Yet, her story is not confined to the judiciary. In her youth, Nepal’s turbulent political circumstances made her both directly and indirectly part of movements. At one point, even her name surfaced in connection with an aircraft hijacking case, which kept her in controversy for years. However, it is also true that the main current of her life has always been dedicated to justice, the constitution, and the rights of the people.
Today, as Nepal goes through a transitional phase, Karki’s leadership is viewed as a balanced and steady voice. Her Indian connection is not just educational and ideological, but also highlights the complexity of South Asian neighborly relations and their shared cultural heritage.
The people of Nepal now aspire for leadership that is neither weighed down by the burdens of the past nor entangled in the tug-of-war of international politics. In this regard, Sushila Karki’s interim leadership stands as a ray of hope. Her challenge will be to uphold constitutional dignity and the people’s trust amid political instability.
In this new chapter of Nepalese politics, it will be fascinating to see how this scholar from BHU, this powerful woman of the judiciary, and this leader shaped by a life of struggle uses her experience and vision to lead the nation forward. Her leadership is not only significant for Nepal but also sends a strong message for democracy and women’s empowerment across South Asia.
