Sushmita Dev’s Exit Reshapes Northeast Political Landscape

CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India ePress/ITDC News Bhopal: The political journey of Sushmita Dev continues to attract attention years after her departure from the Indian National Congress, with analysts viewing her move as far more significant than a routine political resignation. Once regarded as a close associate of Rahul Gandhi and one of Congress’s prominent voices from the Northeast, Sushmita Dev left the party in 2021 and subsequently joined the All India Trinamool Congress (TMC), where she later became a Rajya Sabha member.

Her exit was seen as a setback for Congress in the Northeast, particularly in Assam and neighboring states, where she had built a strong political presence. The daughter of former Union Minister Santosh Mohan Dev, Sushmita Dev represented the Silchar Lok Sabha constituency and was known for raising issues related to women’s rights, regional development, and minority communities.

Political observers believe her decision reflected broader challenges faced by Congress in retaining influential regional leaders amid shifting political dynamics. Her move also strengthened TMC’s efforts to expand beyond West Bengal and establish a presence in the Northeast.

Today, Sushmita Dev remains one of the key faces of TMC in the region, playing an important role in the party’s national outreach strategy. Her transition from a Congress loyalist to a prominent TMC parliamentarian continues to be viewed as a significant chapter in contemporary Indian politics and the evolving political landscape of the Northeast.
