CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari has pledged to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in the state within six months and subsequently introduce stringent laws concerning what he described as “love jihad,” “land jihad” and religious conversions. Speaking at a Vishwa Hindu Parishad event in Kolkata, Adhikari said West Bengal would follow the examples of Uttarakhand and Gujarat in implementing the UCC.
Adhikari said his government would function within the framework of the Constitution while protecting Indian culture, traditions and places of worship. He also announced plans for a religious tourism circuit with an estimated investment of ₹1,000 crore over two years.
The state government has already constituted a high-level committee headed by retired Supreme Court judge Justice Ranjana Prakash Desai to examine the draft UCC legislation. The proposed framework covers areas including marriage, divorce, inheritance and adoption, with provisions being examined in the context of different communities.
Adhikari’s latest announcement comes after the BJP had promised during the West Bengal Assembly election campaign to implement the UCC within six months of forming the government. His remarks also indicate that legislation concerning religious conversion and land transactions could follow the UCC. The proposals are likely to remain an important part of the political and legislative debate in West Bengal as the government proceeds with its stated plans.
