Swara targets political parties over renewed Padmaavat jauhar scene controversy

CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Actor Swara Bhasker has responded to the controversy that has resurfaced over the jauhar scene in the film ‘Padmaavat’. She alleged that her old statement was presented in a misleading manner and that an issue nearly a decade old was revived again under a political agenda.

Swara said she had written an open letter in 2018 about the film’s jauhar scene. She said her question was not about calling women who committed jauhar “cowards”, but about what impact such a scene could have on survivors of sexual violence. According to her, a part of her statement was presented on social media out of context.

Political reactions also emerged over the controversy. Bihar Congress spokesperson Snehashish Vardhan said Swara’s personal statement is not the party’s official position and should not be given unnecessary importance. On the other hand, some political leaders, including from the BJP, had criticised her statement. Swara has now claimed that the controversy was deliberately amplified and that a social media campaign was run against her. However, the political and social media debate over her statement continues.
