CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: Switzerland has described India as a rapidly emerging global research and development power and announced a further allocation of CHF 45 million to strengthen the Indo-Swiss science and technology partnership. Swiss President Guy Parmelin made the announcement during discussions with Union Minister for Science and Technology Dr. Jitendra Singh in New Delhi.

The announcement comes as India and Switzerland seek to build a more structured and long-term framework for cooperation in science, research and innovation. The two countries have maintained a formal Science and Technology partnership since 2003, with the Indo-Swiss Joint Research Programme providing a platform for researchers from both sides.

The discussions covered emerging areas including artificial intelligence, quantum technology, biotechnology, space, clean technology and deep-ocean research. Dr. Jitendra Singh highlighted India’s mission-oriented approach to science and technology and the growing focus on interdisciplinary research.

The two sides are also advancing the Indo-Swiss Research Framework, which aims to strengthen research networks, researcher mobility, knowledge exchange and academia-industry linkages. A Letter of Intent between India’s Department of Science and Technology and the Swiss National Science Foundation is expected to support exploratory scientific collaboration and future joint research.

Another implementation arrangement involving the Zurich University of Applied Sciences is aimed at promoting innovation, technology transfer and entrepreneurship through the Indo-Swiss Academia-Industry Training programme. Switzerland has also invited India to participate in the upcoming Geneva AI Summit, reflecting growing cooperation in emerging technologies.

The expanded partnership marks a new phase in more than two decades of India-Switzerland scientific cooperation, with both countries seeking greater institutional collaboration and joint research opportunities in strategic and emerging fields.
