CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Swollen lymph nodes can signal infection; where they are found

Small, bean-shaped lymph nodes present in many parts of the body are an important part of the immune system. They filter lymph fluid and help the body fight bacteria, viruses and other harmful substances. During an infection, these lymph nodes can swell, and pain or tenderness may also be felt when they are touched.

Lymph nodes are found in several places in the body. The main locations include the neck, under the chin, around the ears, the armpits and the groin, where the thigh joins the body. Lymph nodes are also present behind the knees. Lymph nodes located near an infection often swell first. For example, in a throat or ear infection, lymph nodes in the neck may become enlarged.

The most common cause of swelling in lymph nodes is infection, including colds, throat or ear infections and skin infections. However, swelling that lasts for a long time or has no clear cause should not be ignored. In some cases, immune-related diseases or cancer can also cause lymph nodes to enlarge. This does not mean that every swollen lymph node is a sign of cancer.

If lymph nodes are continuing to enlarge, do not reduce in size within one to two weeks, feel hard, or do not move when pressed, a doctor should examine them. Medical advice is also necessary if symptoms such as fever, excessive sweating at night or unexplained weight loss are present. Immediate medical help should be sought if there is difficulty breathing or swallowing.
