According to reports, the incident took place during the high-level debate of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Erdogan was addressing the UN platform at the time. In the viral footage, Al-Sharaa’s attention appears to be on his mobile phone for some time. Some reports also claimed that he was watching and sharing Reels, although the available footage does not make clear what he was actually viewing or sending.
Ahmed al-Sharaa is attending the United Nations General Assembly for the second time this year. Earlier in 2025, he made history as the first Syrian representative in nearly six decades to address the UN General Assembly. This time, he is leading the Syrian delegation and is scheduled to address the General Assembly on September 23.
During the United Nations General Assembly, Al-Sharaa has also discussed several international issues. At an event in New York, referring to talks between Syria and Israel, he said considerable progress had been made on security arrangements between the two sides.
