CNN Central News & Network–ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has urged the Central Government to abolish the National Eligibility-cum-Entrance Test (NEET) and allow states to admit medical students based on Class 12 marks. The demand comes after the cancellation of NEET-UG 2026 following allegations of a nationwide question paper leak. Vijay stated that repeated controversies surrounding the examination have exposed “structural flaws” in the current system and shattered the hopes of lakhs of students across India.
In his letter to the Centre, Vijay emphasized that Tamil Nadu has consistently opposed NEET, arguing that the exam disadvantages rural students, government school candidates, Tamil-medium learners, and economically weaker sections. He called for MBBS, BDS, and AYUSH admissions under state quotas to be conducted using Class 12 board examination scores instead of a centralized entrance test.
The NEET paper leak controversy has reignited a nationwide debate over transparency, fairness, coaching culture, and the pressure associated with competitive entrance examinations. While supporters believe scrapping NEET would create equal opportunities, critics argue that a common exam ensures uniform standards in medical admissions across India.
