CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Delhi: Delhi: CNN Central News and Network – ITDC India ePress / ITDC News Bhopal: The Comptroller and Auditor General’s performance audit report on the Jal Jeevan Mission in Tamil Nadu has raised serious questions over the implementation of the scheme.
According to the report, tap connection coverage in the state rose from about 17 percent in 2019 to nearly 84 percent by 2024. However, adequate water supply could not be ensured in several rural areas. Around 50 percent of rural households in the audited districts were not receiving the prescribed norm of 55 litres of water per day.
The report also found that nearly 96 percent of taps were installed at the main doorway or outside the house instead of inside homes. In Nagapattinam, none of the audited habitations received water as per the prescribed quantity. In Coimbatore, 100 percent tap connection coverage was claimed, but only 8.67 percent of habitations met the water quantity norm.
Several water tanks could not be put to use, laboratories testing water were found lacking facilities, and many RO plants were found shut. The report stressed the need to strengthen monitoring, quality testing and inter-departmental coordination in the scheme.
