CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: The Tamil Nadu government has sought a change in the operator of Chennai airport, with Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay writing to Prime Minister Narendra Modi in August requesting the Centre’s intervention. The State has expressed concerns over aspects of the airport’s functioning and has sought an operator other than the Airports Authority of India (AAI).
According to reports, the State government’s letter highlighted the need for better airport management to support Tamil Nadu’s efforts to attract industries and investment. It said improvements were required in areas including passenger traffic, aircraft movements and cargo handling.
The request comes after the Tamil Nadu government decided to drop its proposed greenfield airport project at Parandur in Kancheepuram district and focus on expanding the existing Chennai airport. The State has shortlisted Cheyyur and Gummidipoondi as possible locations for a second airport, although a new facility would take several years to become operational.
The proposal effectively opens the possibility of private-sector management of Chennai airport. The State government has pointed to delays in some infrastructure projects and the need for improved passenger facilities as reasons for seeking a change in the operating arrangement.
The Communist Party of India has opposed the proposal, describing it as an attempt to privatise the airport and calling for improvements under public-sector management instead. This remains a political position expressed by the party.
