CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tamil Nadu has introduced new restrictions on smartphone use at 52 major temples across the state, with the rules coming into effect from September 1, 2026. Under the new system, devotees carrying camera-enabled smartphones are required to deposit their devices at designated counters before entering temple premises. Basic mobile phones without cameras are permitted.
The decision has been implemented by the Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department in accordance with earlier directions of the Madras High Court. The restrictions are intended to preserve the sanctity and peaceful atmosphere of temples and prevent activities such as unauthorised photography, videography, selfies and social-media reels.
Devotees depositing their smartphones may be charged ₹5 per device at participating temples. They receive an acknowledgement slip or token, which must be produced while collecting the phone after darshan. At some temples, details including the devotee’s photograph, mobile model and phone number are recorded to ensure secure handling.
The government has clarified that the ₹5 charge is intended to cover operational expenses associated with phone-deposit counters, including staff, lockers and related infrastructure, rather than generate revenue. However, authorities have indicated that the fee may be waived depending on individual temple circumstances and public feedback.
The rules have also been modified to accommodate certain devotees. Pregnant women, people carrying infants, elderly persons and people with disabilities may be exempted from the smartphone restriction. During major festival days involving heavy crowds, devotees may also be allowed to retain their phones without depositing them.
The initiative follows concerns over increasing use of smartphones for photography and social-media content inside religious premises. Temple authorities have been directed to provide clear notices and adequate arrangements so that the new system does not create unnecessary inconvenience or long queues for devotees.
The government has stated that the objective is to enable worshippers to experience temples in a peaceful and spiritually focused environment while protecting their religious, cultural and architectural heritage.
