CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tamil Nadu’s first booth-less toll collection system has become operational at the Paranur toll plaza near Chengalpattu on the Chennai–Tiruchi National Highway. The Multi-Lane Free Flow (MLFF) system became operational from the night of September 30, allowing vehicles to pass through the toll point without stopping at conventional toll booths.

Under the new system, the existing manned toll booths have been replaced with overhead gantries equipped with Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) readers, radar scanners, surveillance cameras and FASTag-integrated Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR) technology. FASTag-equipped vehicles can pass through the tolling point while their tags are scanned automatically.

Vehicles without a valid FASTag or with insufficient balance can be identified through the ANPR system, with challans issued according to applicable rules. Exempt vehicles, including those carrying certain categories of public officials, can also pass through without stopping.

The Paranur toll plaza handles around 46,500 vehicles a day. The introduction of MLFF is aimed at reducing queues and congestion, particularly during weekends and the upcoming festive season when traffic towards southern Tamil Nadu increases.

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) had earlier conducted trial operations of the MLFF system at Paranur, along with toll plazas at Nemili near Sriperumbudur and Chennasamudram near Walajah. The system is expected to reduce waiting time and improve traffic flow on these busy highway stretches.

Following the Paranur rollout, NHAI is expected to assess the system’s performance, including its impact on traffic movement, toll collection and travel time, before considering wider expansion to other toll plazas.
