CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has taken a major step on the language issue in the state’s politics. Chief Minister Vijay on Thursday moved a resolution in the Assembly seeking the central government’s approval to recognise Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court. The Assembly passed the resolution unanimously.
After the resolution was passed by the Assembly, the matter now rests with the central government. The Centre’s approval will be necessary for making Tamil the principal language of the Madras High Court. Through the resolution, the Centre has been requested to take forward the required constitutional and legal process in this direction.
The issue has been raised earlier as well. Demands for the use of Tamil in the Madras High Court have been made in Tamil Nadu in the past. The state Assembly had passed a resolution in the same direction in 2006. Chief Minister Vijay’s government has now brought the issue before the Assembly again and sought fresh action from the Centre.
The state government says the use of the local language in the judicial process could make it easier for Tamil-speaking people to understand court proceedings and access the justice system. However, the passage of the resolution does not by itself grant Tamil the status of the principal language of the Madras High Court; the further constitutional process must be completed by the Centre. The Vijay government’s move is also being seen as a reflection of its political priority on issues linked to the Tamil language and regional identity.
