CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has taken a major step in the state’s language politics. On Thursday, Chief Minister Vijay moved a resolution in the Assembly seeking the central government’s approval to recognise Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court. The Assembly passed the resolution unanimously.
The main objective of the resolution is to promote the use of Tamil in judicial proceedings at the Madras High Court. The state government has argued that Tamil is a classical language and that its legal terminology has also developed considerably.
With the resolution passed by the Assembly, the matter now rests with the central government. The Centre’s approval will be required to make Tamil the principal language of the Madras High Court. Through the resolution, the Centre has been requested to take forward the necessary constitutional and legal process in this direction.
The issue has been raised earlier as well. Demands for the use of Tamil in the Madras High Court have been made in Tamil Nadu in the past. The state Assembly had passed a resolution in this direction in 2006 as well. Now, Chief Minister Vijay’s government has brought the issue before the Assembly again and sought fresh action from the Centre.
The state government says the use of the local language in the judicial process can make it easier for Tamil-speaking people to understand court proceedings and access the justice system. However, passage of the resolution does not by itself give Tamil the status of the principal language of the Madras High Court; the completion of further constitutional procedures by the Centre is necessary. The Vijay government’s move is also being seen as a political priority linked to the Tamil language and regional identity.
