CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: BJP leader Tamilisai Soundararajan has questioned Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s recent United Kingdom visit, adding to the political debate over the purpose and outcomes of the overseas trip. Opposition leaders have raised questions about the need for the visit, particularly after an investment agreement involving Samvardhana Motherson International, a company headquartered in Noida, was announced in London.
During the UK visit, Samvardhana Motherson International, along with its European and UK-based joint venture entities, signed an MoU with Guidance Tamil Nadu for an investment of around ₹11,000 crore in the state. The proposed projects include integrated design, engineering, manufacturing, assembly and logistics facilities and are expected to create around 7,000 jobs, according to reports.
The investment announcement has been cited by the Tamil Nadu government and Vijay’s TVK as an outcome of the visit. The TVK later said the overall trip secured investment commitments of about ₹15,300 crore and more than 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.
At the same time, BJP and AIADMK leaders have questioned the expenses, itinerary and necessity of the foreign visit. Their comments have focused particularly on the participation of an India-headquartered company in an agreement signed during the UK tour.
The controversy therefore centres on differing political assessments of the trip’s purpose, investment outcomes and expenditure.
