CNN Central News & Network-ITDC India Epress/ITDC News Bhopal: Jagiroad. Tata Group’s semiconductor assembly and testing unit at Jagiroad in Assam’s Morigaon district has taken an important step towards production. Pilot chip production has begun at the plant. According to Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, test production has started in the plant’s first clean room, and its formal inauguration is likely in December 2026 or January 2027. The project, being developed at a cost of around Rs 27,000 crore, will have the capacity to produce nearly 4.8 crore semiconductor chips per day once it becomes fully operational. The unit could play an important role in strengthening the country’s semiconductor supply chain and meeting the needs of domestic and global markets.

Technologies such as wire bonding, flip chip and advanced packaging will be used at the plant. Chips produced here can be used in sectors such as automobiles, electric vehicles, telecommunications, healthcare and consumer electronics. The project is estimated to generate more than 27,000 direct and indirect jobs. The Assam government considers it an important project in developing the state as a major centre for the electronics and semiconductor industry. Further expansion of the project is expected to increase employment and opportunities for ancillary industries. The Jagiroad plant is part of the government’s broader plan to strengthen India’s semiconductor ecosystem. However, this unit is not a silicon wafer fabrication facility, but a chip assembly, packaging and testing facility.
